Kurt Tucholsky poem
There’s a poet that is accredited to Kurt Tucholsky and accurately describes the actual finance-crisis. Monika found out that this is a fake floating through the net since a while.

Wenn die Börsenkurse fallen,
regt sich Kummer fast bei allen,
aber manche blühen auf:
Ihr Rezept heißt Leerverkauf.

Keck verhökern diese Knaben
Dinge, die sie gar nicht haben,
treten selbst den Absturz los,
den sie brauchen - echt famos!

Leichter noch bei solchen Taten
tun sie sich mit Derivaten:
Wenn Papier den Wert frisiert,
wird die Wirkung potenziert.

Wenn in Folge Banken krachen,
haben Sparer nichts zu lachen,
und die Hypothek aufs Haus
heißt, Bewohner müssen raus.

Trifft’s hingegen große Banken,
kommt die ganze Welt ins Wanken -
auch die Spekulantenbrut
zittert jetzt um Hab und Gut!”

Soll man das System gefährden?
Da muß eingeschritten werden:
Der Gewinn, der bleibt privat,
die Verluste kauft der Staat.

Dazu braucht der Staat Kredite,
und das bringt erneut Profite,
hat man doch in jenem Land
die Regierung in der Hand.

Für die Zechen dieser Frechen
hat der Kleine Mann zu blechen
und - das ist das Feine ja -
nicht nur in Amerika!

Aber sollten sich die Massen
das mal nimmer bieten lassen,
ist der Ausweg längst bedacht:
Dann wird bisschen Krieg gemacht.

This poem tells it at all - and more, it uses cynism, what in my sight is the right start to analyse, Steffi. 1929 and what followed shurely seems to be the closest analogy to actual fears. And artists in that time saw it with sensititvity.
Media Space happens in Germany. Tucholsky´s poem is the second historical piece I would like to have placed - in this case over the door of the entrance to 2009´s Media Space. (The other piece is Club of Rome´s “Limits to Growth” from 1972, placed somewhere in the corner, just the cover).
Media Space intends to be international… If we ever would like to have one piece in the exhibition, that uses languages of all kind - I don´t think of this all-ruling english, but languages that use other letters - mandarin, japanese, korean, russian, arabian - then I would find a non-rhyming translation of this poem the right signal.

Funny! So I thought to be a translator - and suddenly am allowed to feel as the author:
If the stock notations fall,
sorrow moves almost at all,
but some secretly feel well:
They offer what they cannot sell.

These boys deal without any frown
objects they don’t really own,
hide the credit, get the cash,
give the kick to make things crash.

They construct tricky obligates,
swapping market with derivatives:
If paper promises a lie,
the rise and fall is ten times high.

At least the bank´s crash will be done,
and savers don´t know where to run.
Their house´s mortgage can´t be payed,
all tries to save it come to late.

If this happens to world wide banks,
the whole world looses correct ranks.
Even the speculator´s nation
trembles for their accumulation.

Shall this endanger everyone?
No - the market must go on.
Profit must stay a private thing:
The state must buy the loosening.
.
This state needs loans to buy that shit,
and this once more brings good profit -
dealers exist in every land,
which hold governments in their hand.

For crimes of these rich impudent
working men must pay the rent.
Those who are mighty to betray
don´t live at all in USA…

And if the masses anytime
fight powerful against the crime,
then solution is quite near:
a war will come, and kill, and clear.
